Will H. Tunnard papers, 1861-1961 (bulk 1883-1915).

Collection consists principally of letters from Will H. Tunnard to Ione Burden, a student in Baton Rouge with whom Tunnard corresponded about his memories of the Civil War, the state of his health, family life, and his activities and social life in Shreveport, La. Among the other letters in the collection is a note from Jefferson Davis, dated 1887, expressing his regret that he will not be able to attend the Louisiana Exposition in Shreveport; several letters from Davis's widow, Varina Jefferson Davis, thanking Tunnard for sending newspaper clippings and for his messages of condolence after her husband's death; and a letter from U.S. President Howard Taft's secretary acknowledging the receipt of a letter Tunnard evidently wrote in support of the retention of John E. Hamilton as consul in Cornwall, Ontario. The collection also includes newspaper clippings of columns and poems written by Tunnard, mostly on sentimental and moralistic themes, and news stories about Tunnard's Civil War experiences; a souvenir book from the 1899 meeting of the United Confederate Veterans in Charleston, S.C.; a photograph of Tunnard taken at the conclusion of the Civil War; various Civil War mementos, including ribbons and badges of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and United Confederate Veterans; and badges of the Louisiana Press Association.
